Belgian Tervuren
Smart and obedient, the Belgian Tervuren is serious and watchful with strong protective and territorial instincts. They are loyal to their master, and thrive on companionship. They tend to attach themselves and bond strongly to one or two people.
Known to be a charmer, the Belgian Tervuren has a great sense of humor and is very intelligent. They are alert and elegant and love spending time with their families. They are confident in their ability to protect their people and property. If left alone, they may find ways to entertain themselves that may be destructive to their surroundings.
They have strong herding instincts with a temperament that may be difficult to first time dog owners. They are known to chase anything that moves – including cars or joggers – and will do so all day long if they could. They are also known to nip at people’s heels. That said, they require adequate exercise – at least one hour daily – and mental stimulation to keep them from being bored.
Though intelligent, the Belgian Tervuren is an independent thinker. Consistent and persistent training is requited to earn their respect and trust. Intimidation or anger will not work on them as they are sensitive in nature. If they are brought up with other animals they will get along just fine with them – cats included.
A hardy breed, the Belgian Tervuren has no major health concerns. Some may have skin allergies. There are minor concerns with epilepsy, and occasionally hip or elbow dysplasia.
Interesting Fact: The Belgian Tervuren is a member of the Belgian Shepherd breed.
